"Hambone"
Spending most of their time tending to the farm in southern Montana during their youth, Harold and Buck had a great deal of time to spend with one another. Harold was in charge of the chickens and horses, while Buck was responsible for the cows. As you might suspect, as young boys, Harold and Buck would often have to make their own fun. One of their favorite pass times was playing cops and robbers.
Buck would wait up in the rafters of the barn for Harold to walk through the doors and would pounce onto him screaming "Put 'em up!". This one particular day Buck had pinned Harold down right on top of an anthill beneath the hay where the remains of their lunch had been days before. As Harold forced Buck off of him he slowly realized his leg was being feasted upon by fiery red ants. Harold slapped his knee to get all the ants to stop biting, which irritated the ants even more, so he had to slap even harder. As this was happening Buck was a little confused. Not knowing what to say, only fragments of words came out of his mouth and he began to be short of breath in panic for his dearest brother Harold. Harold clasped his hands together to offer up a prayer for his brother Buck, but still words would not come out. Eventually, Buck got the ants out and they went back to the farmhouse.
They were both intrigued by the beat and sounds made from that incident that they tried to replicate the situation again, this time less painful. Buck and Harold would sure entertain their family for the next week or two showing off their new found talent. They got so famous around town, that even many years later, Buck and Harold would travel the country performing their routine. When asked what this type of performance is called by a Montana Star reporter, Harold and Buck had no idea, they had not thought of a name. Soon after much thought, they remembered what had triggered the ants to come into the barn in the first place, and Buck called it, "Hambone".
